Pleven Medical University is one of the five medical universities in Bulgaria; Pleven. It was established in 1974; expanding the horizons, size and reputation of the City Hospital, founded in 1865. Combining traditions of the past with the present possibilities, the university incorporates educational and therapeutic facilities, with a contemporary pre-clinical base, Institute Hospital.

With more than 1000 beds, the hospital provides in all major medical fields. As well as having a large number of specialized clinics, research units with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment are also available. These are efficiently used for research, treat patients, train students, trainee doctors and post graduates.

Currently, there are 2044 students. 275 of these are foreigners; including 78 of Indian nationality – the biggest community of foreign students at the university. Other international students are from Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine, Moldova, Greece, Turkey, Nigeria, Albania, Cyprus, Congo, Syria, Algeria, USA, Japan, Great Britain and France!

Various modern teaching methods are applied in the academic process. These include theoretical lectures, small group practical tutorials and seminars. Additionally, the students may join extracurricular teaching courses and scientific circles functioning at these departments. Training groups are composed of a maximum of 6 students.

Highly qualified lecturers with comprehensive academic experience are employed. The educational process is carried out in 24 departments by more than 60 Professors and 300 Assistant Professors. Most of them are members of national and international scientific and medical societies and authors of research studies.

Students can freely join student unions and societies of their choosing. Foreign students can establish their own national, ethnic and religious communities the functioning of which has to be in compliance with the laws of the Republic of Bulgaria. According to their interests and individual capabilities, students can become members of different scientific circles, culture and sports clubs. 

The Degree and license is accredited in many countries around the world and allows you to go back and practice in the UK. Bulgarian standards through the duration of the course meet EU requirements.

Country: Bulgaria City: Pleven Bulgaria is situated in South Eastern Europe, in the North Eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. The north of the country is occupied by the vast lowlands of the Danube Plain with the river Danube defining the border with neighbouring Romania. The south of the country, is dominated by highlands and elevated plains whilst, in the east, the Black Sea coast surrounding Varna, and Burgas attracts tourists all year round (which, given the beauty of the black sea coastline is not hard to believe!). Bulgaria has been an EU member since January 2007 and the currency used is the Bulgarian leva. Pleven is the 7th most populous city in Bulgaria, located in the northern part of the country. It is internationally known for the siege of Pleven in 1877 as it was a major battlefield during the Russo-Turkish war held for the purpose of liberation of Bulgaria. Pleven is a small and thriving city, bustling hundreds of international and Bulgarian medical students. Although small, it has everything you could possibly need as long as you look in the right places! Medicine

The English medicine program lasts 6 years. Medicine in Bulgaria is typically structured so that the first 2 years focus on theory, with the majority of the next 3 years focusing on clinical study. Finally, the programme is completed with an internship year of medical rotations before graduation. During the final year of their studies, students are required to take the state exam (anyone who has studied medicine in Bulgaria must take), in order to receive their license to practice. At the end of the six years, students receive the professional qualification of Physician or Doctor of Medicine (MD), and are awarded a Master's Degree. The Degree and license is accredited in many countries around the world and allows you to go back and practice in the UK. Bulgarian standards through the duration of the course meet EU requirements. The main objective of the preclinical practice is to provide professional training in the field of the studied specialty, to improve the acquired practical knowledge and skills, to cultivate work habits in order to be able to solve organizational, prophylactic, diagnostic and other professional tasks. The clinical practice /Internship/ is carried out at the various clinics of the University Hospital. After that those students who have successfully passed their state examinations acquire a diploma for completed medical education along with the qualification Master’s degree with the professional right to practice general medicine.  A PBL (problem based learning) approach is applied in Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry in the second and third semester, in Pathological anatomy and Pathological Physiology in the fourth semester, in Microbiology and Propaedeutic of Surgical Diseases in the fourth semester and individually in the programs of study in Pathological Anatomy and Clinical Pharmacology.

How can you travel around Pleven?

Taxis and Public Transport. Taxis are plentiful and very cheap by UK standards (Most taxi journeys are around 1-2 Euros). Most taxis are metered and yellow taxis are generally considered reliable. Avoid taxis parked outside hotels or in tourist areas as they will inevitably charge inflated prices. There are also buses which are very frequent in most locations.

How is the weather in Pleven?

Pleven generally experiences a warm and temperate climate, with a moderate level of rainfall especially in the summer months. During the winter, there is a lot of heavy snowfall and the temperature can reach upto -20, whilst in the summer it can be expected to reach anything from the mid thirties to forties (degrees Celsius).
